Marie Horton has been announced as the new Director of Education, taking up her position from May 27, 2020.

Marie Horton is an experienced education professional and holds an initial degree from Cardiff University, a Master’s degree from Bristol University and has undertaken further professional qualifications from Liverpool Hope University.

MRs Horton said said: “I am delighted to take up the post of Director of Education with FIG. I am looking forward to working with FIG colleagues, Education Leaders and staff to serve the Falkland Island community to deliver a broad quality education.”

FIG Chief Executive Barry Rowland welcomed the appointment: “Education and skills are critically important to the future of the Falkland Islands. We have established a strong foundation led by a capable senior management team. I look forward to Marie joining our team and driving further improvements.”

Education Portfolio holder MLA Stacy Bragger commented: “I am pleased to welcome Marie as our new Director of Education. She joins an excellent team and I look forward to working with her as we continue to build on the progress made in recent years. I would also like to thank Executive Head Teacher Karen Steen for her exceptional work as the Acting Director over the last few months.”

Mrs Horton has held a number of senior management roles in schools, national and regional organisations and comes to FIG from local government in the United Kingdom. She will be accompanied by her husband Rob.

As a result of the Falklands Islands Government COVID-19 response, Mrs Horton will, like all new arrivals, be in quarantine for 14 days.
