122 mile swim raises funds to head for Island Games 2017

ONE hundred and twenty two miles was the distance swam by a group of swimmers last Saturday night with the aim of raising funds to send swimmers to the Island Games in Gotland next year.

The group, organised by Rachel Crowie, Debbi Ford and Sarah Clement, began the mammoth task to clock up 120 sponsored miles at 9pm and finished at 9am the next morning.

A hard core of elite swim club members were assisted by many other willing swimmers (48 in total) of all ages. Daniel Clarke swam an incredible 10 miles while Ella Clement pounded out 9 miles.

Sarah Clement told Penguin news that all of the swimmers that came along, “set a goal and then absolutely smashed it.” Whether it was two lengths, 64 lengths or 640 lengths everybody swam their heart out.

In the end 7808 lengths were produced, “and it was the little ones at the end that helped us just make it over the target,” said Sarah. Some of the seven-year-old were swimming up to a mile.
She added, “Thank you to all the volunteers and helpers; no matter what you did, big or small it all played  part in helping us succeed.”

She also thanked sponsors Falklands 4x4, Malvina House Hotel, The Waterfront, The Print Shop, the Leisure Centre and Sue Wilks.
